Alex Scandurra


CEO, serial entrepreneur, mentor, board member and angel investor with the ability to span across startup, scaleup, corporate and government. Driven by values and purpose, Alex has exceptional leadership qualities established in the military and refined through high levels of emotional intelligence, transparent vulnerability, humility, and authenticity. This is complemented by an exceptional focus on insights through to execution. Multi-skilled in a range of fields from strategy to tactics and with firsthand geopolitical experience across three different continents. Holds an Executive MBA with Distinction from London Business School. Prior to launching Stone & Chalk in 2015, Alex had an illustrious career in project and construction management, global sourcing and innovation in Australia, the Middle East, Asia and the UK.

As a project and construction engineer, he oversaw Lend Lease projects with cumulative project value of over $650M in Australia. As the Head of Partner Management in ANZ, he was responsible for large Optus & Vodafone 3G network deployments on behalf of Nokia, which led him to relocate to Dubai to cover Global Services Sourcing for the Middle East which included Pakistan and Afghanistan to the east, the Gulf countries and west to Saudi Arabia. This role extended to the Managed Services business where Alex led the research and development of renewable energy systems and new business models.

After completing his Executive MBA at London Business School, Alex was then appointed in 2011 by Barclays in London as their first external hire to build a new group-wide innovation capability with the objective of transforming the bank post the Global Financial Crisis.

During the three years with Barclays in London, Alex introduced and industrialized human-centered design across the group in partnership with leading design firm IDEO, became an inventor of a registered patent, created Barclays RISE, established and launched the Barclays Accelerator powered by TechStars. Barclays RISE is the bank’s innovation hub and launched in 2014 in London and shortly after in Manchester. Now RISE operates in 5 countries and the Barclays accelerator powered by TechStars is also in London and New York.

Back in Australia after seven years working overseas, Alex launched Stone & Chalk in Sydney in August 2015. Since then, Stone & Chalk has successfully relocated from Bridge St in Sydney to the Sydney Startup Hub, has expanded into Melbourne in 2017 and has just launched in Adelaide in October 2019.

For the last 8 years, Alex has worked closely with all levels of Government to promote entrepreneurship. During his time in the UK, Alex worked closely with Prime Minister Cameron’s senior advisors on policies and initiatives relating to boosting innovation and entrepreneurship post- GFC. Since returning to Australia, Alex has worked with Federal Ministers, Australian Government Departments and agencies, State Ministers and State Government Departments as well as the City of Sydney to bring their respective jurisdictions at the forefront of innovation.

Alex was previously an Officer in the Australian Army for nine years reaching the rank of Captain.
